Part II

Gathering as much information as possible is a critical element in developing a student profile, which can be used as a tool to help determine the best colleges for any individual.  Like humans, colleges, too, have their own characters and their strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to use this information to compile a list of appropriate schools.  Parents are the best resources to provide information about your children, so your responses to these questions should be carefully considered, as they become important parts of the profile of your daughter/son.

From Scaling the Ivy Wall: 12 Winning Steps to College Admission by Howard Greene and Robert Minton; Little Brown and Company, 1987.

1. What characteristics are you especially interested in finding in a college or university for your son/daughter?  You might wish to comment on the colleges’ types, styles, atmospheres, academic reputations, and institutional prestige, as well as locations.

2. Describe to yourself your child’s relative strengths as a student (organization, motivation, self-discipline, independence, creativity, growth potential et. al.)
________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________

3. Colleges often ask for several words that best describe an applicant.  They also ask schools to assess individuals in areas such as leadership, confidence, warmth of personality, concern for others, energy and maturity. How would you describe your child’s personality and values?
