| Feel free to copy these forms we have designed and use them to record the pieces of information you will need to complete the bib card for each resource you use in writing your research paper. Remember, you won't necessarily have information in every box, just those boxes that are available in the source you are using. MLA regularly updates their format requirements, so whenever you're uncertain or need help with other types of documentation (periodicals/magazines, interviews, videos, etc.) check this web site, this site, or the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. for clarification. |
WEB SITES (a printable form)
The information you need should be relatively easy to locate on the web site you’re using. Cite what is available and be especially careful in recording the entire URL accurately, so the information can be found again if necessary—even if you print it out and don’t plan to return to the site again. After you have as many pieces of information recorded as you can find, you can easily copy it onto your bib cards in the format shown below. Remember, if you cannot find all of the information, cite what is available.
Author of the article used Lastname, Firstname Middlename or Initial . |
Title of the document you used in quotation marks. “ .” |
Information about the source if it is also in available in print. (i.e. – for a book -- Author. “Title.” Publication. Publisher. Date: pages. for a periodical -- Publication. Date: pages.) . |
Name of the web site Underlined. (usually in the blue bar at the top of your screen) . |
Editor’s name and/or version/edition number, if one is given. Ed. . (and/or) Vers. . |
Name of sponsoring institution or organization ( a university, an association, government agency, business, etc.) (Usually listed at the bottom of the site’s home page with the copyright information) . |
Date of electronic publication (copyright), or of the latest update (written: day month year, i.e. 31 January 2001) . |
Date you accessed the web site (written: day month year, i.e. 31 January 20 01) . |
Network address or Universal Resource Locator (URL) (Enclose the URL in brackets < > and be sure not to leave out anything ++) < http:// >. |
Path: |
++If the web site doesn’t assign a specific URL to your document or if the URL is too long and complicated to copy easily, you can give the URL for the search page and follow it with the term Path: and the terms you used to locate your document. (for example: Path: Abstracts; K-O.)
Ask one of the librarians for assistance if you need help with these entries.
Your work cited card will look something like this:
Lastname, Firstname Middlename or Initial. “Title of the document.” Print information. (if |
applicable) Name of the web site. Editor. (and/or) Version number/edition. (if |
