| Feel free to copy these forms we have designed and use them to record the pieces of information you will need to complete the bib card for each resource you use in writing your research paper. Remember, you won't necessarily have information in every box, just those boxes that are available in the source you are using. MLA regularly updates their format requirements, so whenever you're uncertain or need help with other types of documentation (periodicals/magazines, interviews, videos, etc.) check this web site, this site, or the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. for clarification. |
ONLINE DATABASE SOURCES (a printable form)
A basic bibliography information for online databases–MLA style:
The information you need should be relatively easy to locate on the site you’re using. In fact many databases provide a sample of the correct documentation for you. Be sure to look for this feature in our databases as a “How to Cite” or “Citation” feature.
In the form below list what is available and be especially careful in recording the entire URL or the site’s home page URL and your search path accurately, so the information can be found again if necessary—even if you print it out and don’t plan to return to the site again. After you have as many pieces of information recorded as you can find, you can easily copy it onto your bib cards in the format shown below. Remember, if you cannot find all of the information, cite what is provided.
Author of the document used. Lastname, Firstname Middlename or Initial . |
Title of the document you used in quotation marks. “ .” |
Information about the source if it was also in available in print. (i.e. – for a book -- Author. “Title.” Publication. Publisher. Date: pages. for a periodical -- Publication. Date: pages.) . |
Name of the database. (i.e., Health Resource Center, or Knowledge Source, or DISCovering Authors) . |
Name of the service. (i.e., Infotrac, SIRS, Student Resource Center, etc.) . |
Name of the library in which you accessed the document including its city and state. (Omit this if you accessed it at home.) . |
Date you accessed the web site (written: day month year, i.e. 31 January 2001) . |
Network address or Universal Resource Locator (URL) (Enclose the URL in brackets < > and be sure not to leave out anything ++)< http:// >. |
Path: For databases in DISCUS, provide the main URL and your search path . |
++If the database doesn’t assign a specific URL to your document or if the URL is too long and complicated to copy easily, you can give the URL for the search page and follow it with the term Path: and the terms you used to locate your document. (for example: Path: Abstracts; K-O.)
Ask one of the librarians for assistance if you need help with either of these additional entries.
Your work cited card will look something like this:
Lastname, Firstname Middlename or Initial. “Title of the document.” Print |
