| B. Student and Community Demographic
Data The demographics of our student body can be found in Table 6. Our student numbers remained constant, averaging around 1455 students during the 2000-2003 school years. Current enrollment for the 2003-2004 school year has jumped significantly to 1526. This increase has resulted in a shortage of classrooms and textbooks, and increased class sizes. Despite the increase, the ethnic population remains stable with 69.4% Caucasian, 27.9% Black and 2.7% Hispanic. Students with disabilities continue to make-up at 10% of the total school population. Information gathered from families shows that single parents and two parent families are in nearly equal proportion with 47% single parent and 50% two parent homes. The average number of children per household is 3.5. Twenty-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This number has remained constant over the years. Parent education figures show that 78% of the parents in our community are high school graduates; in comparison, 55% of the parents whose children attend North Augusta High School are high school graduates. We also found that 20% of the parents in the community hold college degrees, and 57% of that group has students who attend NAHS. North Augusta is a small city with a population of about 18,000 in a county with a population of about 144,000. Because of careful attention to city planning and proximity to downtown Augusta, Georgia, its residents enjoy many educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Aiken County is the sixth largest school district in South Carolina in population. It has grown steadily with a 20% increase in the past ten years. People between the ages of five and eighteen comprise the fastest growing segment of the population. The racial makeup of Aiken County is 71% Caucasian, 26% Black, and 2 % Hispanic, and 1% other or mixed heritage. Go on to School Characteristics |
