This course is recommended for students who have not performed adequately on PACT assessments. Students will strengthen their written and spoken language skills, develop a more diverse vocabulary, review basic research skills, and improve critical thinking skills. They will read works from the five major literary genres, be able to identify characteristics that distinguish literary forms. Student writing will include persuasive, expository essays, and technical reports. Students will use spoken and visual language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes. |

Student writings should include expository essays and creative pieces. They will make formal and extemporaneous oral presentations in the narrative and expository modes. This course is for intellectually gifted students who have been recommended by their previous English teacher or who are in the Pre-IB program. The course has a genre-based curriculum representing varied historical periods, cultures, themes, and literary styles. The student will acquire skills, expand vocabulary, and refine his/her grammatical knowledge in analyzing and interpreting literature, as demonstrated through written and oral performance. |
This course is designed for students who plan to enter the work force or to attend a technical college after high school graduation. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, grammar, public speaking, and technical writing for the work place. English 3 TP also incorporates a chronological survey of American literature and text-based writing assignments. Students participate in a variety of research project and “hands-on” classroom activities and discussions that assist in the development of communication skills necessary for long-term career success. | ||

This course is designed for college-bound students. Emphasis is placed on grammar instruction, vocabulary development and SAT preparation, expository writing, or oral presentations. English 3 CP provides the student with a chronological survey of American literature from the Native American oral tradition to contemporary selections from the modern era. The curriculum focuses on examination of the major periods and themes of the American tradition, along with an emphasis on rhetorical devices and analysis of literature. The class covers a wide range of texts of increasing complexity designed to promote independent reading skills. A major research paper on related topics is required. |

It exposes students to the major themes and periods of British literature. They will continue to analyze the use of literary elements in a variety of literary genres and real-world texts and career-based. Students write in a variety of genres, including technical and essay writing. Diverse oral communication opportunities are given. Students demonstrate the ability to develop a thesis, write/speak for clarity, create sentence variety, revise and edit in multiple-paragraph composition, resumes, memos, friendly and business letters, reports, and proposals. |
This course is designed for college-bound students. It exposes students of the major themes and periods of British literature. Students analyze literature by using their knowledge of the purpose, structure, and stylistic elements of various genres. Analysis includes examining themes, styles, and trends of the various literary periods in British literature. Students paraphrase ideas and synthesize them with ideas from other literary works. Students demonstrate the ability to use writing to explain, inform, entertain, persuade, respond to texts, make connections, and support ideas. Writing activities culminate in an analytical research paper in which the student demonstrates the ability to gather research information in a variety of sources and present the information in a variety of formats. | This course is designed for Seniors who are committed to improving their communication skills in preparation for Freshman English college course. Emphasis is placed on writing formal essays (expository, associational, definitive, narrative, descriptive, inductive, deductive, and persuasive), the critical analysis, business letters, the research paper, and children’s stories, as well as analyzing short stories, poetry, and other literary works. Parallel reading is used as the basis for writing literary criticism. This course is designated as an academic elective. |
This course is designed for the International Baccalaureate diploma and certificate candidate. The curriculum presents highly esteemed works of world literature for discussion and intensive analysis. The sophisticated tone of class discussions and the nature of the related work dictate that the students should be mature and highly motivated. Ten to twelve major literary works are studied in depth. Class work incorporates lecture and discussion, independent and cooperative analysis, writing assignments, and group and independent presentations. A significant amount of outside research and preparation is a necessary requirement for the class. Assessment criteria include major tests, quizzes, essays, research papers, oral presentations, and comprehensive journals. During the Junior year, students must complete two IB prescribed oral assessments: a rehearsed presentation, and an unrehearsed taped commentary. Upon successful completion of all criteria, the IB diploma/certificate candidate continues to the English 5 HL/IB/AP Literature and Composition course. | ||

This course is the second year of the International Baccalaureate studies (Language A). Students will continue their intensive analyses of great works from the international canon. Seven to nine major works will be studied during the Senior year. As in the first segment of the two-year IB program, students should be mature and self-motivated. A sophisticated level of scholarship is desired. Extensive reading, research, and composition will prepare the student for the IB prescribed external assessments, a two-hour written commentary (unprepared) and a two-hour written essay (prepared). IB students will take both the AP and IB exams. AP students will take the AP exam. |
