This course introduces students to the Spanish language by emphasizing basic skills in areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as aspects of Hispanic culture. Students acquire knowledge of the civilization, culture, customs, and way of life. Spanish 1 students are eligible to join the Spanish Club, which seeks to be a social extension of the classroom.

Objectives of the course are to expand usage of the language through small group discussion and oral questioning, to experience cultural activities, and to have the student expand his own imagination and knowledge through writing papers, reading short stories, and giving opinions in Spanish. Spanish 3 students are eligible for the Spanish Club, which seeks to be a social extension of the classroom. Students who complete Spanish 3 are prepared to take college language exemption exams and/or more advanced Spanish courses.

This course is designed for the IB Diploma/Certificate Candidate, who must take the third and fourth year (a 2-year commitment) at a more advanced study of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Objectives of this course are to encourage the students to discuss topics of interest from everyday situations. Developing fluency will be emphasized as students continue grammatical accuracy. Students will learn the skills necessary to communicate in the world of international business, and will read and analyze stories to become familiar with differences in old and modern Spanish literature. Spanish 3 IB students are eligible for the Spanish club, which seeks to be a social extension of the classroom. Students who complete Spanish 3 IB and continue to Spanish 4SL/IB are required to sit for the IB exam.

French readings, short stories, novels and history are used to expand vocabulary and increase reading skills. At the conclusion of this course, most students are prepared to exempt 2 or 3 semesters of college French. French 3 students are eligible for the French Club, which seeks to be a social extension of the classroom.
